“… and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday.” Isaiah 58:10
Did You Know …
- Haiti is among the most “food deprived” nations on earth?
- 90% of the children in Haiti suffer from parasites, diseases, and malnutrition?
- 1 out of every 5 children die before their 5th birthday?
The Struggle. Once known as “The Pearl of the Caribbean,” Haiti is now known as the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. It is a country ravaged by national disaster and a people oppressed by their own dictatorial leadership. As a result of rampant unemployment, over 66% of the population lives in abject poverty.
The Ministry. The majority of students coming to school arrived with hunger filled stomachs. To show the love of Christ in a tangible way, nutritional feeding programs were established as an essential part of daily ministry.
During the school year 2018-2019, the number of students which are fed Monday-Thursday at the four NHMI church/school locations is almost 1,800 children. Because it is difficult to teach children whose stomachs are hungry, lunch time at each school begins at 10:00 a.m. Meals include hot dishes of rice, beans, pasta, and sauce. Vegetables vary based on the season and financial assistance. Our feeding centers like to add carrots, potatoes, corn, plantains, celery, peas, and sweet potatoes.
Note: In Haiti, the constant escalating cost of food creates an urgent need for increased financial support for the feeding centers. FMSC (Feed My Starving Children) has assisted us in helping to provide nutrition based meals on several one-time occasions. Please pray with us that God will open opportunities such as FMSC or other avenues of opportunity (such as nutrient-rich peanut butter bought in bulk) to supplement the needs of our feeding programs. Thank you.
