“… and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday.” Isaiah 58
Did You Know …
- Haiti is among the most “food deprived” nations on earth?
- 90% of the children in Haiti suffer from parasites, diseases, and malnutrition?
- 1 out of every 5 children die before their 5th birthday?
The Struggle. Once known as “The Pearl of the Caribbean,” Haiti is now known as the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. It is a country ravaged by national disaster and a people oppressed by the country’s dictatorial leadership. As a result of rampant unemployment, over 66% of the population lives in abject poverty.
The Ministry. The majority of students coming to school arrive with hunger filled stomachs. To show the love of Christ in a tangible way, nutritional feeding programs were established as an essential part of daily ministry.
FYI. In the winter of 2019, a proposal was submitted, reviewed, and accepted by Feed My Starving Children (FMSC). In partnership with this global organization, a 40′ container was shipped to Haiti in April with over 272,000 one-cup MannaPack Rice meals. MannaPack Rice is a formula created to meet the nutritional needs of malnourished children. Packs are protein enriched and vitamin-mineral-nutrient fortified in a blend of rice, dehydrated vegetables, and soy nuggets.
What a blessing beyond measure as almost 2,000 children eat Monday-Thursday within the NHMI school network. Because it is difficult to teach children whose stomachs are hungry, lunch time at each school begins at 10:00 a.m. MannaPack Rice meals will be supplemented with additional beans and sauce. Fresh vegetables vary based on the season and can include carrots, potatoes, corn, plantains, celery, peas, and sweet potatoes.
Note: In Haiti, the constant escalating cost of food creates an urgent need for increased financial support for the feeding centers. Please pray with us that God will continue to open opportunities to provide food supplements such as nutrient-rich peanut butter – to be bought in bulk – to assist with the needs of our feeding programs and our elderly. Thank you.
